Amps are rare enemies found throughout the Newer Super Mario Bros. series.

They are mainly found within space-themed levels, often in groups, although they do appear during Bowser's boss fight in Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii and have a whole section in Bowser's Castle from Newer Super Mario Bros. DS.

Amps are black metallic balls with two purely yellow eyes half-hidden by their white-lipped smiling mouths, showing a red tongue inside. Yellow electricity surrounds them at almost all times. Their idle animation shows them constantly spinning. Touching them removes their electricity.

Amps act more-so as tools than enemies. They will float, stationary, hurting the player on touch. They are often used as a way of guiding the player where and where not to go.

Amps are completely immune to fireballs from a Fire Flower and hammers from a Hammer Suit, though they can be frozen by iceballs from an Ice Flower or Penguin Suit to temporarily become a floating platform. This fact is used in some cases to hide secrets, such as Star Coins.

In Newer Super Mario Bros. DS, Amps can zap any metallic box they come into contact with.
