Big Thwomps are uncommon enemies found throughout the Newer Super Mario Bros. series. They're larger variants of the Thwomp.

Appearance[]

Big Thwomps resemble regular Thwomps aside from their size. They're dark gray rectangular stone blocks with several lighter gray spikes protruding out of their sides. On their front is a perpetually angry face with two small white eyes with red pupils surrounded by black circles under a sort of unibrow and a large block-toothed mouth. When passive, their eyes and mouth are closed, though when attacking, their eyes and mouth are largely opened.

Behavior[]

Big Thwomps behave near identically to regular Thwomps. They patiently await, stationary on ceilings. When the player passes under them, they'll begin to crash downward, giving the player some time to escape before they hit the ground. Unlike regular Thwomps, any breakable blocks found on their path will be destroyed. Upon hitting the ground, Big Thwomps will slowly rise up back to the ceiling, unable to strike down while doing so. Contact on any side of a Thwomp will hurt the player.

Big Thwomps cannot be defeated by fireballs from a Fire Flower, iceballs from an Ice Flower or Penguin Suit, or hammers from a Hammer Suit. They can, however, be defeated by contact with a player under the effects of a Super Star.

Due to their limited defeat methods, it is best to simply avoid contact and move on. To do so, the player can either bait the Big Thwomp's strike downward before pulling back, running under as it rises, or simply run as fast as they can beneath the Big Thwomp if it's high enough off the ground.
