Dry Bones are uncommon enemies found throughout the Newer Super Mario Bros. series. They're undead skeletal Koopa Troopas that cannot be defeated by most regular methods.

Appearance[]

Dry Bones are white skeletal bipedal turtles akin to Koopa Troopas with a hollow shell and boney limbs. They have a pair of black yellow-pupiled eyes and wear white gloves and boots.

At certain musical queues in certain games, Dry Bones will spin their head completely around with no gameplay effect.

Behavior[]

Dry Bones slowly march left and right on the ground, turning at ledges and walls. When stomped by the player, they'll fall apart, laying on the floor for a few seconds before regenerating and becoming active once more.

Dry Bones are completely immune to fireballs from a Fire Flower. They can be completely defeated with other player-made projectiles, however, such as iceballs from an Ice Flower or Penguin Suit or hammers from a Hammer Suit, falling out of their spot like most foes in Newer Super Mario Bros. DS and with the oncoming projectile dismembering them in Wii-based games. Other methods to defeat them include hitting them with a Koopa Troopa shell, hitting them from below when they're standing on a Brick Block or Question Block, and coming in contact with them under the effects of a Super Star or Mega Mushroom.

Within Bowser's Castle from Newer Super Mario Bros. DS, certain Koopa Troopas melt into Dry Bones on contact with wavy lava.

These enemies tend to appear in Tower and Castle stages (as in the base games), but also appear in the standard courses of Pumpkin Boneyards of Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii and Newer Super Mario Bros. DS despite their tendency towards Tower and Castle stages. In fact, they do not appear in the Tower or Castle of either Pumpkin Boneyard.
