Checkpoints (also known as midway flags, midway points or checkpoint flags) are extremely common objects found throughout the Newer Super Mario Bros. series. They mark the midway point of a level.

Checkpoints appear in almost every level throughout the Newer series, with only two notable exceptions: Eruption Crater and Dragonride Firesea from Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii, as their gimmicks do not really favor a checkpoint. Tetromino Switch Palace and See you next time! from Newer: Falling Leaf and Spiritful Steeple from Newer Super Mario Bros. DS also lack them, though arguments can be made as one is technically a Switch Palace and the other isn't really a legitimate level.

Appearance[]

Inactive checkpoints are often portrayed as black flags with Bowser's face printed in white on them. Once activated, the flag's primary color will change to that of the main color of the player who activated it, with the white print changing into that player's symbol or a symbol representing the current world. They have yellow poles with black bases to stand them up.

Behavior[]

Checkpoints are stationary. Once they're touched, they will activate, only deactivating if the player exits the level manually without losing a life or if they start another level while the checkpoint is active. There are only one per level (except for The House of Stairs, which has a checkpoint in two different places), and when they're activated, they will act as a new respawn point for if the player is defeated. The player will also retain any Star Coins obtained prior to their activation.

If the player touches a checkpoint while in Small form, they will automatically transform into their Super form.
