Goombas are iconic enemies found throughout the Newer Super Mario Bros. series. They're found in most levels, especially near the beginning of each game.

Appearance[]

Goombas are often depicted as brown mushroom-like creatures with darker brown shoe-like feet and beige armless bodies. They have two large black often angry eyebrows over their two white eyes and a pair of white fangs sprouting from their lower jaw.

Occasionally, Goombas are depicted as having different colors according to their environment. For example, in Navyblue Molemine, they appear blue, while in Magma Iceburrow, they appear gray.

In Newer Super Mario Bros. DS, Goombas appear as 2D sprites instead of 3D models since in the original New Super Mario Bros., they were 2D sprites to improve performance.

Behavior[]

Goombas will slowly walk left and right, falling off ledges and turning at walls. They can be defeated by any sort of stomp to their heads (aside from a default stomp using a Mini Mushroom), while contact with any side of their bodies other than their top will result in being damaged.

They can also be defeated by Fire Flowers' fireballs, Hammer Suits' hammers, Super Stars, and Mega Mushrooms. They can be frozen by Ice Flowers and Penguin Suits' iceballs.

Two Goombas will spawn upon stomping the smallest form of a Big Goomba and several can spawn if the player ground pounds under the effect of a Mega Mushroom. Goombas are also found spawning infinitely through certain Warp Pipes. Upon stomping a Paragoomba, it will turn into a regular Goomba.
