Lava is a common hazard found throughout the Newer Super Mario Bros. series.

Just as it is in the base games, lava is a scorching red substance with an orange-white glow on its surface, not unlike real lava.

Lava often lays flat at the bottom of an area, killing the player instantly on contact of any kind whatsoever (even when the player is under the influence of a Super Star or Mega Mushroom). Most enemies perish within it on contact.

In some situations, however, lava is also seen rising and lowering on its own to act as a more stressful obstacle.

Rarely, wavy lava is seen, which is regular lava with a scrolling wavy pattern. In Newer Super Mario Bros. DS, it has the power to turn Koopa Troopas and Big Koopa Troopas into Dry Bones and Big Dry Bones respectively.
