Mini Mushrooms are uncommon powerups which appear in all of the Newer Super Mario Bros. games. Their appearance is similar to a Super Mushroom, but small and blue.

Behavior[]

Mini Mushrooms will slide across the ground, falling at pits and turning at walls. In Newer Super Mario Bros. DS, it will do a small jump at every Bahp Point.

Once the Mini Mushroom is touched, the player will reduce their size to a half-block, allowing them to walk through extremely small gaps and enter Mini Warp Pipes. Due to their lack of size, their jumps will be higher and "floatier" than usual and they will be granted the ability to walk on water (they will, however, fall through if they ground pound or stand still). This size decrease also has some downsides, however—no matter the form that preceded, the player will always have 1 hit point, meaning they'll die at a single touch. Stomping on enemies is now futile, as the player's weight is too light and they'll simply bounce of the enemy. To damage an enemy, the player must ground pound them instead.

Due to these downsides, the Mini Mushroom is more so used to unlock Secret Exits and Star Coins—with it sometimes being the main gimmick of an entire level.
