Newer Super Mario Bros. U was a planned ROM hack of New Super Mario Bros. U, developed by the Newer Team. It would have been released after Newer Super Mario Bros. DS but was announced as cancelled by a Newer Team member, grishhung, in favor of Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii Deluxe.
Production[]
The first and only trailer for Newer Super Mario Bros. U was posted on January 1, 2018 on the Newer Team's official YouTube channel, showing some gameplay. However, it was originally posted on Skawo's channel at an earlier date.
After some time, on February 9, 2018, grishhung announced in the comments of the trailer that the project was officially cancelled, citing inactivity and a lack of progress.
Over three years later, in mid-2021, the Newer Team made a post in the community tab of their YouTube channel announcing that they were releasing everything that had been made for Newer Super Mario Bros. U before cancellation. This included all 3 finished levels, some Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii remakes, including one titled "Palm Beach U," another one titled 4-1 Snowfield Tundra," erroneously mistaking it with 5-1 from the Wii's Newer title, an unfinished level titled "1-3," another one titled "2-3 Geyser Forest," and yet another one titled "Beachy Beach." There are also some "snippets" shown in the trailer, where the only complete sections of the levels are those shown in the trailer. One is titled "1-3 lava snippet," another named "Frolicking Fuzzies example," one called "1-2 beach snippet." and one final level titled "Ghostly Glowblocks." Additionally, there are World Map concepts included in the package, and the ASM patches are also downloadable.
