Pokeys are rare enemies seen throughout the Newer Super Mario Bros. series. They are segmented cactus-like creatures only found within desert-themed levels.

Appearance[]

Pokeys are yellow cactus-like creatures made up of multiple circular segments. They have multiple green spikes (black in Newer Super Mario Bros. DS) sprouting from their bodies. On its topmost segment is its head, which sports two large black eyes with white pupils and a happy smile. In Newer Super Mario Bros. DS, a pink flower also sprouts from the top of its head.

Behavior[]

Pokeys slowly wiggle left to right, turning at edges and walls. They have multiple segments whose amounts vary from Pokey to Pokey. These segments can be removed one by one by Fire Flowers' fireballs or by being eaten by Yoshi, making the Pokey shorter and shorter. If the Pokey's head is hit by a Fire Flower's fireball or eaten by Yoshi, the entire Pokey will be defeated.

If a Pokey is hit by an Ice Flower or Penguin Suit's iceball, their segments will freeze and go everywhere, defeating it as it unfreezes. If a Pokey is hit anywhere by a Hammer Suit's hammer, they will instantly become defeated. In Newer Super Mario Bros. DS, however, Pokeys are completely immune to Hammer Suit's hammers. Pokeys can also be instantly defeated by Super Stars and Mega Mushrooms.

Every time a level's song has a Bah Point, Pokeys will temporarily become fruit-y, allowing the player to safely jump on them for a short time.
