Skewers are rare hazards found throughout the Newer Super Mario Bros. series.

Skewers are long block pillars with a spiked edge on their end. Small yellow spikes abundantly lay all across them, hence their alternative name, Spike Pillar.

Skewers will attempt to harm the player, which they do so with most contact, often by forcefully launching forward from one spot in whichever direction they are facing, stopping once they hit any sort of ground. Skewers vary in attack cycle speeds. In Newer Super Mario Bros. DS, Skewers just jut out forward, whereas in Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii, they rotate on their axis during their thrust attack. Some Skewers, however, are stationary (like the Skewers close to the boss door in Thornspire Doomship) or gently sway across a straight line (two being in Skewerspring Tower). At their spiked end, little one-block spaces can be crouched under to potentially avoid being hurt.

As stated before, most contact will hurt the player. Exceptions to this are players under the effects of Super Stars or Mega Mushrooms, which will simply phase through them.
